A Vast and Mighty Deep:
The Great Vermont Flood of 1811
[A Kindle Single]
"Altho' the rain began after the rising of the sun, yet it was so powerful that by 9 or 10 o'clock A.M. the streams began to be formidable. It was not long before bridges, mills, tan houses, yards, dwelling houses, &c went in rapid succession......"
On the morning of July 22, 1811, heavy rain began to fall across southern Vermont. Over the next twelve hours, more than a foot of precipitation streamed down the hills and into the river valleys, pushing flood waters into towns and villages throughout the region. As thousands struggled to escape the rising waters, the citizens of Middletown raced to rescue a house filled with women and children threatened with certain death. "A Vast and Mighty Deep" explores one of the greatest disasters ever to strike New England - an event that reshaped the physical and economic landscape of the young state of Vermont.
